“Then the remnant of Jacob
Will be among many peoples
Like dew from the Lord,
Like showers on vegetation
Which do not wait for man
Or delay for the sons of men.” (Micah 5:7)
This passage from the book of Micah is talking about a group of people called the remnant of Jacob. In a literal, historical sense, they are the surviving descendants of Jacob, who was also known as Israel. In a spiritual sense, they can refer to both – those who are favored of God from among physical Israel and those who have been grafted in to the House of Israel from among all nations.
The verse uses two comparisons to help us understand how this remnant will be. First, it says they will be like dew from God. Dew is the little droplets of water you might see on grass early in the morning. It’s refreshing and brings life to the plants. This comparison suggests that God’s blessing and care will be upon the remnant, just like dew brings freshness and renewal.
The second comparison is that the remnant will be like droplets on grass. These droplets don’t rely on anyone or anything else to exist. Similarly, the remnant’s hope and trust will be in the Heavenly Father alone, rather than in other people or worldly powers. This means that they won’t depend on other humans for their well-being, but will rely on God for their needs and guidance.
Despite difficult times and being scattered among different peoples, the remnant will be taken care of by God. The remnant will find its hope and trust in Him alone, and God will bless and sustain His own people.
